On Saturday 23 August 2025, the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) hosted its very first Mandarin-language guided tour of the national touring exhibition Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio, welcoming over 40 Mandarin-speaking community members from across the region.

— Stella,
Stella Sun, a young Chinese arts practitioner, came to Australia on a working holiday visa and is currently living in Shepparton while working in fruit picking. She led the tour for the first time in Mandarin, bringing warmth, confidence, and deep understanding to her role — blending professional art knowledge with personal interpretation.
“It was an experience I never imagined — introducing Australian art in my mother tongue. Seeing people listening intently and connecting with the works moved me deeply,” Stella said.
Her talk served as a bridge, connecting Brett Whiteley’s iconic works to the Mandarin-speaking community. Many attendees said it was their first time visiting an art gallery — and they left feeling inspired and welcomed.

Exploring Whiteley’s Studio World
Key highlights included Self-Portrait in the Studio (1976) and a series of three self-portraits in different media. Stella engaged the audience in thinking deeply about Whiteley’s colour choices, life experiences, and the connections between creativity and personal struggle.

When Language Builds Connection
With all attendees being Mandarin speakers, language played a key role. Many shared that art can often feel inaccessible — but Stella’s Mandarin explanation made them feel that art, too, could speak their language.
“I used to feel disconnected from art. Now I feel I can like it — I can understand it.”— Steven Song, Mandarin-speaking member of the GV community

“I brought my two kids today. Seeing someone speak Mandarin while explaining art was truly inspiring — such a wonderful cultural introduction for them.”
— Janet from Cobram, a Chinese mum of two young children
